Welcome to My Epicurean Journal
Lao-tzu, a Chinese philosopher, wrote, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” and that has been my philosophy for as long as I can remember.
My new epicurean journey begins the same way but in a different state and a different culture. In our ever changing world, it’s too easy to believe the US is one contiguous state—mall stores patterned the same way, the same chain restaurants and hotels, people moving around and Facebook connecting us. We start to believe, if you’ve seen one city, you’ve seen them all. There’s nothing new, nothing exciting, just the same old, same old. Hogwash!
Moving from the northeast to coastal central Florida was a mind opener. Yes, the big malls are the same and hotels and restaurants are similar but there are many small towns that have held on to their identity. Here in the warmer climate, snow and ice are watched on TV; our clouds are more dramatic; the landscape very flat; the palm trees make me feel like I’m on vacation every day; the ocean is just there and we have miles and miles of beautiful beaches; mostly great weather, lots of outdoor events, and scenery that changes dramatically in a few short miles. I am enamored of my new home.
There’s an excitement about learning what is around me. That’s what my blog is about. It’s not just about Florida but more about opening your eyes to your surroundings–taking the ordinary out of every day. And, you can do the same thing where you live. Ask questions, explore streets and towns you’ve never visited before, do a little research on what makes the town unique? Is there a unique restaurant? Find out who lives/lived there? Are there botanical gardens? Special events? Ask questions at the Farmer’s Market or from friends or people on the street. Everyone has their own unique way of looking at and exploring an area. What hobbies are you interested in and where can you meet up with likeminded individuals? It’s all available if you open your mind to your surroundings.
So come with me as I explore and record my journeys in my new home. My Epicurean Journal is the place where food, culture and travel connect, and I’m happy to have you come along for the journey (and please write and let me know about your explorations).
Happy Journeys
